I went to Humboldt State University, receiving my B. A. in Economics in 1966. Then like many other nomadic Americans, I went to graduate school in a completely different state, receiving my M.A. (1968) and Ph. D. (1974) in Economics from the University of Missouri. As with many graduate students, I worked as a teaching assistant while a graduate student and discovered I really enjoyed teaching. From Mizzou, I taught at Westminster College, where Sir Winston Churchill gave his famous Iron Curtain speech in 1948. Westminster College was a private, Presbyterian affiliated, men's college emphasizing liberal arts education. I left Westminster College and came to Michigan Technological University in 1972, telling my wife we were moving closer to California. She still doesn't believe me! I have spent most of my career working on two very closely related areas. First, I have spent many years devising demonstrations and experiential exercises for use in teaching economics, particularly in the principles and intermediate price theory courses. My best opportunity to utilize these techniques came in 1994 when I was a Fulbright scholar at the University of Rijeka, in Rijeka, Croatia (ex-Yugoslavia). I utilized these techniques to teach Microeconomic Principles in a transition setting, as Croatia made a transition from a state oriented planned economy to a market economy. To teach about market determined resource allocation to students who had little or no experience with market institutions would have been difficult (if not impossible) without simulating them in the classroom. An active approach to learning through experiential methods improves student learning. Students don't just learn about markets; they become active participant in them. Second, I have focused much of my research efforts on experimental methods in markets, primarily investigating Walrasian Tâtonnement auction institutions. A secondary interest is in the effect of information and its distribution among traders in markets. A tertiary interest is in the pricing of scholarly journals, particularly price discrimination between institutional and individual subscribers. In addition, as an applied microeconomist I have in conjunction with colleagues here and abroad published articles on pricing of water and college tuition and indices of economic activity. I am a member of the American Economic Association and the Economic Science Association. I am primarily active in the latter organization. I am also interested in exchange programs between Michigan Technological University and universities in central Europe. I have for the past few years helped to administer an exchange program between MTU and the Technical University of Wroclaw in Poland.","www.sbe.mtu.edu/cv/pjoyce.pdf","None","www.sbe.mtu.edu/pjoyce/","Yes");

After five years in the semiconductor manufacturing industry, I decided to pursue a new career in education.  My first move was into corporate education and training, working as a performance consultant for IBM.  Team development was an area of need frequently cited by managers, and the techniques used to bring that about sparked an interest in me. Since that first step I've earned a master's degree in education and taught math and computer skills at MTU and several community colleges.  Most recently I joined the MTU School of Business and Economics as an instructor, teaching a class in team development and group decision making.  I enjoy incorporating experiential learning techniques in the classroom.  This interest prompted me to get involved with the MTU Challenge Course as a facilitator, a role that I enjoy very much.  Outside of Tech, I am very involved with the Copper Country Humane Society as treasurer and Little Brothers Friends of the Elderly as a visiting volunteer.","www.sbe.mtu.edu/cv/tmthomps.pdf","None","www.sbe.mtu.edu/tmthomps","Yes");
